Game Rant
Writing about a hobby that you are passionate about is a dream come true for a first time writer starting their career. Video games for me are a cosy safe space, an indulgence to unwind at the end of a work day. I adore games with incredible storytelling, player-driven narratives, rich characters and of course, beautiful music and awe-inspiring visuals. I love to analyse what makes video games as a storytelling medium so compelling and how different elements are utilised and attractive to different types of gamers, not just from a journalistic point of view, but also as someone who has written a video game script before and would love to hone and improve my game-writing skills.

I have been writing articles for Game Rant since December 2022, and have enjoyed the learning curve it has provided, from pitching consistently, designing my own feature images and adapting to ever-changing formatting and content requirements to align my content with a major brand.

My best performing Articles

While I have worked in a large workspace with a competitive culture at WellBe, the larger scale of Game Rant really encouraged me to be accustomed to pitching articles and meeting expectations of a moderately high workload. Naturally, I got into the habit of being aware of the types of articles that are performing well and anticipating when new popular games are being released that will require a lot of coverage.
However, additional tips I discovered for learning strategies for pitching articles include:

-
Take notes on pitches from other employees, keeping an eye out of which articles get approved and why, and also noting how each person puts a unique spin or perspective on a pitch idea to sell it.

-
Due to the high volume of articles being published every day, double check that my pitches are not repeats or too similar to pre-existing work.

-
Working outside my comfort zone on topics or games that might not ordinarily appeal to me can be hugely rewarding and has led to some of my best performing articles.

-
As much as I look forward to new games, I also have a list of gaps in article coverage, i.e. articles on games that were not covered extensively, articles I feel should exist and that answer common questions.

-
When a game inspires me, I always try to find a way to write about it. Even if it means a more creative approach or angle is needed or if I store it away for a rain, light workload day.

-
Don't be afraid to pursue an article on a game that has little pre-existing content available. While additional primary research may be required (such as undertaking multiple playthroughs), the hard work pays off in multiple article opportunities and becoming an expert in a niche game.
